I Wish Him Luck Because He'll Need It

Simon and I thought he'd never actually openly admit it until he knew he can win the thing (i.e. never), but James Tien has come out and said that he's considering running for CE.

Liberal Party chairman James Tien has openly admitted for the first time that he is considering participation in the Chief Executive by-election, and that the LP will conduct public surveys to compare his level of support with that of Acting CE Donald Tsang.

Tien says that, after discussions with the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong, he decided to conduct surveys in the near future to understand the public's degree of support for him and Tsang. He will look at public support and whether the central government is will to have other candidates in deciding whether to campaign. He will be discussing with the DAB again next week, and will have further information by next Thursday or Friday.

He points out that if the surveys indicate that Donald Tsang enjoys much public support and the centre wishes for him to become CE, the Liberal Party may support Tsang instead.

Tien says that if he runs for CE, he does not want to be an “also-ran” and will give his full energy to the effort.

First analysis: wow that's the dumbest idea ever, 'cuz he's never going to win. The really cynical side of me, though, is saying that he's doing this out of spite, to torpedo the Donald's legitimacy by not running: if James Tien, widely known as the most ambitious politician in Hong Kong, won't run for CE, then there's not even a sliver of possibility that anyone else will win, and this whole election will officially be a sham. But that's probably a little too pointless, even for someone with as big an ego as Tien.

James Tien cannot take a hint. He's convinced he should run for Chief Executive despite everyone telling him not to. I'd love to see his reaction after this (from the SCMP):Mr Tien said his party would conduct opinion polls this week to find out the po... [Read More]
